CMS Superintendent Crystal Hill put on paid leave amid district investigation

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Crystal Hill has been placed on leave pending an investigation, according to a statement by the Board of Education Wednesday. The board provided few details about the investigation, saying only that it involves “administrative and operational oversight.” Deputy Superintendent Melissa Balknight will assume additional responsibilities during Hill’s leave, while district officials say schools and day-to-day operations will continue as normal.

The move comes after a day of widespread speculation about Hill’s status with the district, fueled by her absence from recent graduation ceremonies and a leadership conference for CMS administrators. Rumors of her departure circulated Wednesday before the board announced that Hill would remain employed while an investigation proceeds. “The Board’s responsibility is to ensure appropriate oversight and accountability across the district while supporting the continued operation of our schools,” the statement said. “Because this is an active personnel matter, the Board is limited in what it can discuss publicly at this time.”
