As a member of Carolina Public Press' award-winning news team, you’ll investigate, analyze and explain elections topics in North Carolina, with a heavy emphasis on integrity and security of elections processes and administration, ballot access, elections irregularities, voter information and correcting misinformation before, during and after elections cycles. This is not a job covering the horse-race or polls. We do report on political scandals, elections litigation, redistricting, campaign finance, how policy issues affect key races and results in top statewide political contests.
Carolina Public Press is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, online-only provider of in-depth and investigative reporting on public-interest issues across North Carolina. We emphasize articles rich in context and impact about communities and topics that are underreported, especially in rural areas and those facing economic insecurity.
Team members must be willing to live in North Carolina, but can reside anywhere in the state. For this position, the reporter may need to have sufficient proximity to Raleigh to cover state Board of Elections meetings at times.
This reporter will produce several articles weekly, with more enterprising monthly reporting and longer-term major investigative projects.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of elections processes and issues, with North Carolina knowledge especially helpful. This person should be effective at pursuing stories through combinations of public records requests, online research, development of sources and meeting or hearing coverage. Knowledge and experience with North Carolina’s voting policies, geographical regions and local elections is a plus.
We are looking for a moderately seasoned and skilled journalist with a college degree and at least 2 years of post-college reporting and writing experience in mainstream print or online journalism, though we will consider strong candidates from a broadcast background. This reporter should be able to identify and craft ledes and write clear, active, accurate, informative and interesting copy, both shorter and longer articles. Knowledge of AP style is a plus, as is experience and skill in working with data.

Compensation: This position offers a competitive salary that will depend in part on the reporter’s overall experience and qualifications. We also offer health, dental and optical insurance, paid time off and paid holidays.
