This month's member newspaper is The Robesonian in Lumberton. Now owned by Civitas Media, The Robesonian's roots with NCPA go back to the early 1900's when the newspaper was owned by the Sharpe family,
Humorously, when John Allen Sharpe purchased the newspaper back then, it's owners threw him a party because they wanted to get rid of it so badly. Little did they realize the newspaper would soon turn profitable... and it stays profitable now, more than 100 years later.
John Allen Sharpe became NCPA's president in 1919-1920, and the Sharpe family has been involved with NCPA for more than 100 years in varoius capacities. Today they are mostly Honorary members and have retired from the newspaper business.
Flooded and displaced during Hurricane Matthew last October, the newspaper continued serving its community despite all odds, You can read Editor & Publisher's story on the newspaper here.
