Thames retiring as editor of The Charlotte Observer

Rick Thames, editor of The Charlotte Observer since 2004, and 2008-09 president of NCPA, has announced his plans to retire. Under Thames, three of the Observer's projects were recognized as Pulitzer Prize finalists. Thames also led the Observer's coverage of the 2012 Democratic Convention in Charlotte and the Carolina Panther's 2015-16 Super Bowl run.

Sherry Chisenhall will succeed Thames as editor. Chisenhall, 53, first joined the Observer in 1986 in a variety of editing capacitites. In 2000 she left to take a job as managing editor of The Witchita Eagle, in Kansas where Thames was then editor. In 2016 she returned to Charlotte as managing editor of the Observer.
