Report for America supports journalism where cutbacks hit hard

Posted

Report for America, an organization that has been recently started, is a nonprofit that seeks to replenish understaffed newsrooms with 1,000 journalists by 2022. It will benefit reporters, newspapers and local communities across the U.S.

The program has placed three reporters in the Appalachia area so far and will hire more to send to other parts of the nation that are underrepresented in the journalism world.

The program gives its journalists a stipend and places them in communities that will benefit from strong local journalism. Reporters receive training and must complete a service requirement during their fellowship.

The aim is to immerse journalists in field work where they learn to report on a wide range of topics and recieve hands-on experience while meeting people that change the community daily. They will have opportunities to break big stories and impact small communities greatly.
