George grew up in Hendersonville, NC, and Abbeville, SC. He graduated from Davidson College in 1966 and joined the US Army as a Lieutenant with the Adjutant General Corps.He became publisher of the Times-News in Hendersonville, NC, at age 29, and spent his career in the newspaper business, working in marketing and publishing for papers in Hendersonville, NC, Greenville, SC, Lumberton, NC, Petersburg, VA, Conyers, GA, and Tarboro, NC.
