On Thursday Tribune Publishing ended negotiations with McClatchy to sell its newspaper company.
The newspaper owners were under months of negotiations before Tribune decided to end them. A source says the deal could have fallen through because McClatchy owns the Miami Herald and Tribune Publishing owns the Sun Sentinel. If McClatchy acquired the Sun Sentinel, federal regulators might have stopped the deal because McClatchy would have two main Florida newspapers under its ownership.
Tribune Publishing owns many big-name newspapers, including the Baltimore Sun, the New York Daily News and The Virginian-Pilot. McClatchy owns 30 newspapers throughout 14 states. McClatchy was one of the three total companies that submitted a formal bid to Tribune.
