Community newspapers fear newsprint tariffs will put some of them out of business

A recommendation for final action on the newsprint tariffs by the International Trade Commission is said to be happening in September.

This is in response to recent tariffs that threaten the newspaper industry, especially for small papers. The tariffs could increase newspaper production costs by 8-10% in the near future.

The tariffs have caused an outpour of protests in Washington from community journalists whose newspapers face shutdown due to increasing expenses. The goal is to get congress members on their side because while newspapers can't give testimony to the International Trade Commission, congress members can. Small community newspapers will try to appeal to Congress, hoping they will get more sympathy than larger papers.
