What’s located right between hipster Asheville, North Carolina, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park?
A great editor job with The Mountaineer, an award-winning 138-year-old family-owned (FAMILY OWNED!) semiweekly print and digital newspaper, with a healthy 24/7 online presence, that is devoted strictly to local, community journalism.
Based in Waynesville – hipster lite– this scrappy little paper covers the heck out of Haywood County (population 65,000), a growing tourism, retirement, outdoor recreation, golf and second-home destination. Our big Western North Carolina backyard is flush with fishing, boating, backpacking, hiking, birding and camping opportunities. It’s also home to hundreds of families who go back generations, when logging and manufacturing were king.
The Mountaineer needs a smart, versatile editor who has sound judgment and proven experience leading a small team of reporters, can report and write compelling news stories accurately (including breaking news) as needed, is proficient in InDesign and social media, can take and utilize photos and video and respects the value of small-town journalism. The Mountaineer is the community’s leader in providing high-quality all local news for digital and e-replica versions. Our digital sites attract more than 44 million unique visits monthly.
Mountaineer Publishing offers competitive wages and a 401K program, which includes employer contributions. Our time off program is generous and includes paid parental leave for new parents. We’re 25 miles west of Asheville and 40 miles east of the Smokies.
