Student journalists are the next targets in the latest battles that newsrooms have had to face including layoffs, consolidation and other threats to the industry. Many student papers face an uneasy future of survival, which affects aspiring journalists as student newsrooms provide the foundation of working in the field with hands-on learning and direct involvement in the production process.

While some student papers might not be around much longer, others might be taken over by their respective universities, which leads to censorship concerns and a loss of their independence. 

Editors of student publications and journalist graduates who have left their student newsrooms for community newsrooms have created Facebook groups and funding pages to spread awareness about the perils that student newspapers face. Also, Wednesday is #SaveStudentNewsroomsDay in which student publications nationwide will rally to gain more support and funds so they can contintue their important work.
