Facebook has been the target of criticism about its use of individual consumer's data for election purposes without permission. Zuckerberg agreed to testify before Congress on the matter. Lawmakers, many of whom have expressed dissent toward Facebook's practices, are looking to crack down on the social media site. Facebook's biggest challenge will be to restore public trust.

Other powerhouse companies like Google and Twitter also face pressure to testify about their data privacy practices in light of Facebook's scandal.

Now, in response to criticism, Facebook is redesigning its privacy controls to give consumers more visibility and control over how their information is shared. People will also be able to disallow their personal data from being shared with advertisers.

For angry users who have started a Facebook boycott, the change might be a little too late.
