The American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors are planning to merge and create a new organization to aid journalists. Months of discussion between ASNE and APME have gone into planning and both have agreed to proceed with the merger at their last meeting on June 10.

The American Society of News Editors is a nonprofit that fights for journalistic freedoms such as First Amendment rights and the right for journalists to obtain information. The Associated Press Media Editors innovates techniques for news organizations and journalists to adapt to a changing media environment.

The merged organization aims to encourage and develop news leadership and represent the free press in a larger way, with more resources.

"The proposed merger of ASNE and APME represents an opportunity to create a new and vibrant organization with an even stronger voice to defend press freedom, promote diversity and inclusiveness in content and coverage and build the next generation of journalism leaders," said ASNE President Alfredo Carbajal.
