The Brunswick Beacon
The Brunswick Beacon is a weekly newspaper with a circulation of 10,500. The paper is based in Shallotte, NC, and serves Brunswick County. The area is relatively rural and features miles of beautiful beaches, countless golf courses and world-class saltwater fishing. Myrtle Beach. S.C. and Wilmington, N.C. – each about 30 miles from Shallotte – offer an array of cultural activities including museums, live entertainment and nightlife. The newspaper has earned multiple North Carolina Press Association awards and has been honored repeatedly by LCNI and the National Newspaper Association. The position of staff writer/photographer is responsible for photography and writing for the newspaper and special sections. Assigned beats, general assignments, feature stories, website updates and social media are included.
•Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field or a minimum of two years newsroom experience.
•Solid writing, researching and interviewing skills.
•Knowledge of AP Style.
•Professional grasp of grammar, spelling and punctuation required.
•Competency in photography.
•Pagination skills designing pages in Adobe InDesign a plus.
•Commitment to quality in all aspects of work.
•Good organization and time management skills.
•Ability to work well with other departments and employees with a commitment to team play and continuing improvement.
•Knowledge and interest in the Internet and new media.
•Must have a vehicle to travel to assignments; valid drivers’ license and proof of vehicle insurance must be provided.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Write news, features, columns and stories for special publications as assigned.
•Take photographs (news, features, business/community) as assigned and to accompany stories.
•Update and produce copy, photos, slideshows and video for website.
•Cover assigned beats including attending meetings at night, covering spot news and weekend assignments.
•Generate story ideas relevant to the local community and stay informed of issues on assigned beats.
•Assure accuracy and objectivity in all news reporting.
•Participate in team and continuous improvement initiatives.
•Must be able to meet deadlines.
•Serve as liaison with the public.
Roughly 45 hours per week, with some evening and weekend work required. Reports directly to managing editor.
