NC Policy Watch, the news and commentary project of the Justice Center, is seeking a Managing Editor. The Managing Editor is responsible for supporting the Policy Watch Director in developing and carrying out the work of the project – the websites, events, newsletters, fundraising, and all other aspects of making the project productive and effective. The Managing Editor will serve as the principal day-to-day editor of the Policy Watch websites, including helping Policy Watch reporters to develop and edit their news stories and soliciting and editing content from outside contributors (opinion essays, blog posts and other contributions). The Managing Editor will write a weekly opinion column and frequent blog posts, essays, analyses and summaries of state policy on a wide array of issues relevant to the mission of the Justice Center. The Managing Editor will also make regular television, radio, and public speaking appearances and oversee the project’s Crucial Conversation luncheons and other events.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in journalism, communications, public policy, law or related field and a minimum of seven years of professional experience, ten years preferred, working in the public policy community – journalism, government, advocacy or a combination of all three. Extensive knowledge of North Carolina government, history, politics, and state public policy issues strongly preferred. Excellent writing, reporting, and editing skills, including having published columns or other editorial writing required. Versatile public speaking skills, including the ability to speak before large audiences and debate policy issues on live forums and/or broadcasts required. Strong computer skills preferred including familiarity with new media technologies. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and improving the lives of individuals required. Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends required.
